It makes sense that the coke would etch the aluminum post, allowing its removal. In my former life as a chemist, I once measured the pH of coke, which was an astoundingly low 3.2. For reference, pure water is pH 7, and sulfuric acid is around pH 1. Every integer of decreasing pH represents an order of magnitude increase in acidity, so that coke is an approximately 100,000 times stronger acid than water (which, believe it or not, is a very weak acid).
