Funny, though, how there's a bunch of bird-leg guys in team jerseys shooting off right at the early start time, and then hammering the course non-stop. Any ride where the first question is, "what was your time?" has, shall we say, a certain competitive air. But it's not a race. Nooooo, sir! (What was your time? Heh.)

I don't understand the last sentence. Could someone clarify? Is a comment being made about the validity of the content of VBQ? I was about to subscribe.
