What a wonderful tale! There's no better feeling than working through a problem like this, and getting the part going again. My partner often frowns at my boxes of "bike junk" that I can't bring myself to throw away, but sometimes an pump bracket or other random bit that's been lurking in the bottom of a box gets a new (and othen unexpected) life.
