Yes, Simplex did have a factory in Italy in the 50's. Fausto Coppi won the Tour de France in the early 50's using a more or less modern Simplex cable-operated RD. This item may well have been made in Italy. This invasion by Simplex of their home turf was evidently a wake-up call to Campy which made them replace their rod-operated rear gears with more modern designs. Of course Campy later retaliated by setting up a factory in France.
