In the last week or ten days several top of the line bikes have fetched what
appear to be record prices. A $7000 DeRosa, A $3600 Carlsbad Twin plate
(Ken Denny's reaction: "Are you nuts?" My answer "probably"), last night
a nearly $5000 Cinelli. All sold to list members or lurkers. Folks who
have had their ear to the ground for some time.
I have maintained for a long time that such bikes are undervalued in the
market. It is natural that the first sign of this market correcting itself
will be manifested as movement upward in prices in the high end.
Junk will, of course, always be junk. The middle is a lot more difficult
to figure out.
I am thinking that the inevitable movement upward in prices has has begun.
Folks might do well to grab that top line bike in the very near future...my
hunch is that in a couple of years what seems extravagant now will seem like
good sense then.
