IIRC, the debate was whether Campagnolo produced them with the CIRCULAR CABLE RELIEF under the lever blade, or only with the "U" shaped relief, that came out in about 1974 or so.
And I say:
There was some later discussion about that issue, but further back we went 'round and 'round about whether the "long reach" SR lever was ever made. A couple of well-informed listmembers said that they only appeared as line art in a Campy catalog. When I produced two images from catalogs (Benotto and Raleigh) the holes "must have been airbrushed." Other exmples were presented and "drilled out and reanodized" was floated. This now-ancient thread is just a good example of how far folks will go to defend the conventional wisdom. This is actually good, because we should have to come up with solid evidence before we change the theory. Current understanding is that the long reach SR was indeed made in significant quantities, but they are rare relative to the standard SR lever. I take it that there have been no examples of a Super Record version of the 1st gen lever. Makes sense to me, based on the dates, but I'd certainly change my view if I saw one.
