Am new to the group guys, so I 'd like to contribute without offending.
If I may. Around 1972 as a member of the Southern Bicycle League in Atlanta, GA., one of the senior members did some research on potential helmets and came up with the MSR, Mountain Safety Research, helmet as "recommended" for cycling use, given nothing was specifically made for the sport. They were orange, bright orange with a lip that covered the entire circumference, and they were heavy. Bunch of us in the club bought them and used them. I gave mine away about the time the "skid lid" showed up but if anyone is collecting the old SBL members no doubt have a few stashed in their basements. If I remember right there was also a MSR or something like that. Ray Keener had one someone ask him. It was from a climbing helmet company. Steven

Actually, Skidlid along with the original Bell Biker, were the first widely used bicycle helmets in the US (not counting leather hairnets).

It was made in San Diego in 1983. What in god's name have I turned up here. Did ANYONE actually wear such a thing in 1983? What were the people in San Diego ingesting in 1983 to produce such a thing?
