Varsity's were tanks but a used $40 Varsity was my introduction to racing. After commuting to Montbello from Washington Park everyday for 3-4 months and losing 50 pounds, the racers in Wash Park persuaded me to buy a racing bike. I think that the idea of a Varsity doing laps with them was too much. Anyway, I bought the first of two Gitane Tour de France bikes from Big Wheel and I was set for life. I don't remember what happened to the Varsity but I put a lot of hard miles on it before moving up.
