Its a function of your Internet Service Provider's e-mail server. Some batch process-meaning updates are only available at pre-determined intervals...others are more accessable "real time."
That said, I am really more interested to know what size axles, cones, and bearings I need to get the old three-piece GS hubs rolling.

First, even though an update has just come into my mailbox (based on time-stamp and "you have mail"),someone that is selling something that I immediately contact invariably replies that the item is already sold. Of course I attributed this to the demand for the item, maybe I'm not as fast as I used to be, or the seller changed their mind...fair enough.
Recently however, I posted some items for sale. I was eager to see the posting so I kept checking my email. However, before the email containing my posting was in my inbox, I already had three listers email me that they wanted the item! Since FS items are often sold on a first-come, first-served basis, this system is only fair if everyone on the list is made aware of the posting at the same time, which is not to say that it isn't, but I wanted to bring my suspicions to the List's attention to see if others have had similar experiences.
