Dear British Bike Nuts,

Did any specialty outfit produce custom SA axles, with the intention of moving the hub to the left, to make room for a 5 speed cluster?

I've acquired a Sturmey Archer AW hub that had been fitted with a 5 speed Regina freewheel, screwed onto a threaded driver. The odd thing about this was the axle. At 6 3/8" (162mm) it is a standard Sturmey length, but the right end is about 18mm longer, and the left 18mm shorter. http://bikesmithdesign.com/SA/CustomAxle.jpg 21Kb

The machining marks do not look at all "Sturmeyish", but it sure doesn't look "Homemade" either.
