I got in trouble, (maybe fired) at a shop I worked at 26 years ago that involved Mafac Brake squealing.
I tried everything; sanded the "glaze" off the pads, sanded the rims, toed the brake pads every-which-way you can imagine. Replaced the pads. Nothing worked.
Finally after about five candy bars and a giant Slurpee (I was 14 at the time,) I took some oil and oiled the pads. The manager went out to test ride the bike. He came back and I was fired on the spot as the brakes did not stop the bicycle causing him to crash.
It was not until 10 years later that I learned that squealing is primarily (not always, but primarily) due to vibration--i.e. pivot bolts not greased, pivot bolts not tight, mounting bolt not tight..............
Ted Baer Mary Robinson (ex-President of Ireland) is staying in the house across the street from me. A big white Mercedes limo just came to pick her up. Palo Alto, CA
