It seems more difficult to find uncracked period pulleys every day. They
can sell for as much as a whole derailleur. I am wondering what are the
options?
I have heard that C Record pulleys will work and have some...they are an off
white, however. I have heard that new ones for an 8 speed period derailleur
will work. I have used newer aluminum and Bullseye ones. Finally there
seems the option of Shimano pulleys.
The "accessory pulleys" as my buddy Bill calls the Aluminum ones seem to
require a pair of washers on either side of the pulleys, at least on the
lower wheel. This seems to keep that wheel centered and to keep one from
compressing the idler cage. These wheels apparently are the same width as
Shimano pulleys...but now I hear of wide and narrow Shimano pulleys. Are
the wide ones the same size as Campagnolo ones? Do the 8 speed pulleys
work well in older derailleurs?
I am hoping that those more mechanically gifted than I on the list (this
means just about everyone) who have some expertise in this will suggest
alternatives to the worn out and cracked vintage wheels that are about all
that turn up as spares these days. It is unusual to even buy a derailleur
for parts lately and not find at least one cracked pulley in it. Can they
be repaired? Perhaps with an epoxy?
How are the more expert mechanics on the list dealing with this?
Suggestions greatly appreciated,
Tom Sanders
