I have recently acquired an early to mid '30 Umberto Dei. I am in
the process of having it refinished in the traditional tricolor Dei
paint scheme, and have secured (through the help of Stephen Massland)
decals from Italy. After talking to a number of knowledgeable list
members I have still been unable to definitively establish correct decal
placement and, for that matter, which are the correct decals for a bike
of this era. The decal set comes with two familiar Dei chainring
decals that, without doubt, go on the head and seat tube. However, the
set also comes with a fancy 'Umberto Dei Milano" decal that has the
chainring and is in the green and red color. This decal can be seen on
the downtube of the "1935 mod. Milano-San Remo" bike on the following
web page: http://www.blackbirdsf.org/
However, the decal set also comes with an Umberto Dei signature
decal in script with the tail of the final "i" swinging back under the
entire name. I can find no pictures of this transfer and have been told
that on the 30's bikes this, in fact, may be the correct decal for the
down tube rather than the fancier "Milano" decal. Can anybody offer any
help.
Thanks in advance,
Edward Albert
