My knees said the exact same thing shortly after my 50th birthday.

where I elected to get a Shimano Hyperglide thread-on freewheel. Actually, I ended up getting a couple due to the varying nature of the terrain I find myself on (some weeks at the coast, some weeks in the mountains).
The 11-34 is good for the mountains around Asheville
The 11-28 omits the super low gear, for when I'm not carrying a load.
The 14-28 is what I ride most of the time in the hilly area around my home and also at the coast. It's a good all-around setup.
