Mary,
IMHO, the great Schwinns are the fillet brazed ones mentioned, the Super Sport, Sports Tourer, and the Superior. The Super Sport has a one piece crank, the others have three piece. All three have oversized tubing compared to the Varsity's, etc. See Sheldon Brown's site for a great write-up.
For CHICAGO SCHWINN`S only, numbers are located on the lower left of the head tube
(By The Schwinn head badge). The first letter is the month, the second letter is the year. The letters " I " and " O " are skipped. Examples:
AF***** = Jan. 1970,..... ("A" = Jan., "F" = 1970)
GL***** = July. 1975,..... ("G" = July., "L" = 1975)
For lugged Schwinns, don't forget the World Voyageur, built by Panasonic starting in '73.
