As I write, an auction has just closed for a Richard (no relation) Sachs which was retrofitted with S&S couplers (by E-Ritchie himself) and then painted by the Esteemed Joe Bell. It is beautiful. Some list members bid on it, and it left me feeling a bit conflicted. I love E-Ritchie's bikes, but I also want a travel bike that is as worry-free as possible.
As a slightly heavier Richard Sachs in lovely shape, it is really attractive. But I'm not sure I could bear to travel with a bike that exquisite. My own off-topic travel bike is not eye candy, but I want one that won't attract the wrong kind of attention. I also don't want to worry about possibly nicking the paint on a travel bike, or having to spend lots of time wrapping everything each time I pack..
This one sold "bare nekkid" for $1231, which is less than 3/4 of what comparables sold for recently (although they had headsets and other parts). I wonder if the market just isn't looking for RS as the source for travel beaters?
Of course, if it had gone for a whole bunch less, I would have kicked myself: even a slightly heavier gorgeous RS is still an RS with Joe Bell paint, and gotta be a nice ride.
