Since this does not have the leverage of a complete wheel, is there a way of clamping (holding)the hub while removing the freewheel without damage to the hub? Bruce

The easiest way is to get hold of a band clamp that garages use for removing oil filters from cars, (but not the chain type as that will mark the flange). One of these will grip the flange all the way round without marking it. This method also works if you need to remove the end from a Sturmey Arched hub shell.
