Dan,

Keeper of the flame, as a double entendre applied to framebuilders, is strictly a CR thing. Isn't "old school" a phrase so old that it is itself old-school? Where did it start? Obviously it must go back many decades in general use, but when did it become part of the hipster lexicon? It may have re-emerged recently in reference to certain types of Hip-Hop music, or longboard surfing, or any of a number of other fields to which it is commonly applied, but you can bet that 1960's hot rodders were probably using it to describe 1940's hotrods. In any case, it is in no way strictly a cycling or bike collecting term. Everyone knows what it means.
