Picked up an Italian Road/Track bike that has Columbus "Zeta" Tubing. Does anyone have any inforamtion about this kind of tubing. It's a really nice bike with 600 Arabesque gruppo, Dura-Ace levers and brakes, Rigida "Pro" rims with Tufo tubular tires, 3ttt stem and bars, Christophe straps and toe clips, San Marcos saddle, Silca pump. Bike is a little too small for me.

Looks to me like it was built in San Marcos. Probably for one of the
local riders.
My database only goes back to 1989 or so, so I don't have any other details at this time.

I have gotten these when I have advertised on Dale's site. I don't see them on the Craigslist. Group, One of these scam artists went so far as to send me a $3,000 check "for my bike" unrequested by me. In an effort to pursue it, I took the check to my bank first, (then the police, who were little help) and my bank verified that the check and the bank upon which it was drawn were real just the account numbers were bogus. In their sophistication, they are printing or stealing bank checks. Stay aware, they will probably get smarter.

Looking at the pictures of the 60's Olmo on Ebay (auction # 7175935999) made me think of a few choice adjectives that I have been exposed to during the various times I've worked as a bike mechanic. Even though the Olmo isn't that terrible of a bike, and it certainly is in remarkably good condition considering its age. Many of my fellow mechanics were a rather "colorful" lot and could be quite entertaining - either when sober or in their more normal state. These are the kind of comments uttered when you find out what kind of two-wheeled gem is the next repair tag waiting for you to fix. Or what you say when you click on a vague Ebay or Craigslist posting for "rare vintage bike" and find a Sears Free Spirit that was backed over by the Chevy Impala.
I hope Dale is O.K. with this. Be thinking of vintage "junque" from within the CR time frame to make this more acceptable ! You know - the rusty old department store thing with Campy Valentino derailleurs. The kind of bike that would make a PX10 look like a Bugatti (apologies to P.C. Kohler). Almost ANY Atala. No adjectives used to describe modern Carbon Fiber anything, even if they are more deserving than the old bikes.
Here are a few of my favorites. Please send more. Profanity is encouraged - BUT send those to me off-list. I'll try and clean them up enough to compile and post later.
1. Crapper ( a Dick Swann favorite ) 2. Cheepo 3. H.T.N. Special (H.T.N. = Heavy Trash Night ) 4. Oh Jeez . . . ! (usually uttered while rolling eyes skyward) 5. Cheepalaero - the El Salvadorian mechanic would use this description on both bikes AND certain customers. In the trenches of bike retail and repair this term ended up being used quite frequently. Usually, but not always, out of earshot of the customer. 6. "Fine Item" 7. Endless variations of P.O.S. ( and I'm not referring to Point-Of-Sale ! ) 8. Chancre
C'mon folks - I know we can do better than my feeble list ! These terms are especially nice to have when you are joking around with your riding buddies and someone starts taking their bike a little TOO seriously.
Help a brotha out !

Gang,
Sorry for all of the typing and spelling mistakes in my little story. Rushing through the writing so I can make it to the shop ASAP to get some work done. It finally came to me how to present how our day went, so I banged it out, without even rereading for errors, as usual! I guess that's how you know it's really me writing, it's always like that.
For some reason the other day, I hit something on my computer that now doesn't send my copy of what I wrote to my email. Can't tell if the post made it or what it came off like without my copy until someone responds. Any idea what I did to make this happen? Did I put oil in the radiator or flood the muffler or something?

e-RICHIE and I were conversing (via e-mail) and I mentioned the thread and his previous post about lugs and joining methods. e-RICHIE kindly sent me the quote which I will post here for your edification
"lugs are not lugs for the sake of beauty or touchy-feely conversing about; they constitute a joining process. it is this joining process, coupled with certain types of quality steel as well as with the "maker's touch" (stradivari's varnish?) that produces the <incomparable> work that folks associate with all lugged frames - but really should be associated with quite few."
and... "a kof is a guy that was there then and is still here now. grabbing a lug an using it has no bearing on the status."
Interesting in light of our KOF discussion

I think the sad truth is that you really can't sell anything to foreign buyers except in Canada, UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, NZ and maybe one or two other countries without taking a big risk. Unless of course you know the person via the CR list or otherwise. Of course the guy just across town could rip you off too, but at least the countries I named have fairly solid legal systems and cashier's checks and money orders from those countries are usually good, although they could of course be counterfeit. One could demand PayPal only, but I've heard horror stories about PayPal freezing sellers accounts over unjustified complaints, so the scamers could claim you never shipped the merchandise and probably get a refund via PayPal. That would take a lot of nerve, but these guys seem to have no shortage of nerve. It's a shame an honest collector in some countries may be unfairly suspected because of his location, but that's the reality.

Jerry Moos Houston, Tx

First off, my apologies to anyone who has tried to contact me in the past week and a half or so. My girlfriend's birthday was this past friday and I haven't been online much because I was trying to get things ready for her party, i.e. paint the deck, yard work, etc. well she came down with a fever last tuesday which resulted in a trip to the hospital that night, and some prescriptions which didn't seem to help as the night before her birthday we were back at the hospital and her fever was 103. I thought it was west nile, the doctors thought it could have been viral menengitis. They were on the verge of giving her a birthday spinal tap when her cat scan came back clean and decided it was probably a very severe viral sinus infection. Her party was postponed, she's been crabby all week (I can't blame her) and while she's been napping I've been in the garage tinkering away.
amidst all that what I bought on ebay showed up:
http://ebay.com/
Item: 7170925476
well the description is lacking, and the photos horrible, and that's probably why I got it at the price I did. I opened the box and pulled it out and was puzzled by what I saw. On the top tube, are the TEAM RALEIGH, decals, but downtube has RECORD decal. WHAT THE HELL DID I BUY? I checked the archives and there isn't much info. The bike is full 531 with campy dropouts. Serial number is: WB900 1286 so it was made in 79 at the carlton shop in england? Someone in the archives mentioned that these might have been sold as framesets in europe? that could explain the parts on it. a 72 rear NR derailleur, early dura ace hubs, gran compe calipers, campy levers. any info would be greatly appreciated.
