There is another complication which applies to Dura Ace AX and perhaps to 600 AX as well. There were at least three different cross-sections on DA AX. Two were non-round all the way down for two different aero frame tubesets. The other was aero above the seat clamp but round inside the seat tube. The same may have applied to 600 AX. The post size obviously must match the tubeset. I don't know about shims - perhaps this was an inprovised attempt to match a post to a different tubeset.
