Track Ends, I have said in previous mail that Road Path frames, had track
ends, In the late 40s and 50s club riders like myself could NOT afford to have
different bikes for each event, we where lucky in thoes days to afford even
one bike, SO we had to have a bike frame that we could use for all the various
events, from Time trials, track, hiilclimbs, crosscounty events etc, in thoes
days we also, allways used a single fixed or a sturmey archer hub gear, all
would work with track ends, 3-5 speed gears Simplex Campy etc cost too much
for the avarage club man. So we did not see the need for a forward dropout,
this would not be accepted on the track, so track ends on frames. Also due in
the UK (England) the weather ment mudguards (Fenders) had to be used, also
back brakes, we use to carry our sprnt ,track wheels or timetrial wheels on
two rods attached to the front wheel, held by a toe strap around the
handlebars, then when arriving at the start of the event we would strip down the
bike, mudguards, saddle bag rear brake and the training wheels etc, for
timetrials only the front brake and BELL required by NCU, this would be after riding
in the early AM some 30-40miles to get to the event with a bike that was
30+lbs,my Claud ready for race time with tubs(Sprints) etc would be about 21lbs.
well thats my story and I"m sticking to it!!! Cheers John Crump Oldbrit (Real
Old!! but still riding 40 miles a day) ON A 1950s BIKE
