Years ago I used to line the inside of the clamp with a piece of clear vinyl tape and then run an Xacto blade along the perimeter of the clamp to trim excess. The clear vinyl didn't stain the paint and there was no visible evidence of the existence of the tape being under the clamp once assembled.

But I would no longer do this as I like the patina of clamp damage at this point. "Crazy world ain't it?"

Hope you can make it to Velo Rendezvous 5, Reid. Shaping up to be the best ever and the four previous were doozies!
