Vinyl will probably give reasonable service, but I don't use it, the plasticizers in vinyl are quite volatile, they migrate, and if the bike has a traditional finish, a non catalyzed finish, they can disturb the frame color depending on the chemistry.
3M makes a thin (thin being the operative word) rock chip film used for protecting automobile finishes from road debris, it is adhesive backed, with an acrylic adhesive (it performs like) which is much more stable than the adhesive in any of the vinyl tapes, and migrates much less. I got my stash from a guy who was applying it to a new car for extra protection on the front end, his waste was very useful for bicycle fittings. The stuff is clear, can be removed, and can be applied to either the metal clamp or the paint. It is I think of the polyester family of films and, can also take compression well, I have used it to take up the excess play in an Imperial clamp on metric tubing.
Good for chainstay protection as well.
