Re: OED
Gantlet, obs. form of gauntlet
Gauntlet: 1. A glove worn as part of medevil armor, usually made of leather, covered with plates of steel.
2. In recent use: a stout glove, covering part of the arm as well as the hand used in driving or riding, fencing, wicket keeping etc. (wicket as in cricket, for you non-Brits)
5. ...........to strike with a gauntlet. (hence running of the gauntlet)
Comments in parentheses mine
Julian Shapiro Sag Harbor, NY
ps. and Gant could be someone's name - as in Ron Gant - former outfielder for the Atlanta Braves
