George,

Check out the typical SLs in this auction:

http://ebay.com/<blah

item # 7209052801

Notice how the openings in the rear cage are contoured inward. I think the piece starts as a flat sheet, but gets bulged in some sort of forming process to stiffen/strengthen the cage. Every one of the hundreds of SLs I've seen is like this, except for the set on that Paramount. If you look closely at the set on the Paramont, they are flat in the area of the openings. One of the pics shows good detail, and if you maximize it, you can see the flat rear cage and the Campagnolo lettering pretty clearly. Until I saw the lettering, I thought they might be later KKT or MKS knockoffs, most (all?) of which are flat. I never would have noticed, but the specific CR question about the intro date of the pedal, and the age of the bike set off a (dim, flickering) bulb over my head.

Anyway, someone on this list once mentioned these early pedals, but until now I'd never seen a set.

Man, this is a good list.

Tom,

Could you be more specific about the differences in these early SL pedals compared to the later ones? I can't discern from the photos in the auction the differences that you mention about the flat cage and bulged reinforcement..

Thanks,
