Despite the universal popularity of 52x42 I don't believe it is possible to get a rational set of wide range racing gears-say 108in to 52in- with a five speed block. You get more holes than Swiss cheese. I think the subject "Dumb Gearing" sums it up. Re: the introduction of the 12 cog I see that Whiskers was listing 12 up sixes by Regina and 12 up sevens by Suntour in 1979. Ray Green, Brighton, England
