Subject: [CR]upgrading Campy NR brake performance

"I must confess to being seriously underwhelmed by their braking performance."

To those of you who really ride your vintage steeds, isn't underwhelming brake performance part of the charm of the vintage experience? (TIC)

I actually find Record and SR brakes with stock cables and pads to offer good performance in the context of their era. I have heard that old pads can sometimes harden and degrade braking power. If the pads are new, try filing them to remove material a potential hard surface layer. If that doesn't work, a fresh set of Campys may help, but if you're willing to stray, either Mathauser or Kool Stop will be a lot cheaper.

The basic disadvantage of older brakes, compared to off-topic stuff, is that you can't quickly exert full power from the hoods, which is rarely needed, but nice to have when things go wrong.
