Dan,

Hopefully this answers part of your inquiry.

I believe the group was first offered in late '84 or early '85 and can be visually identified by the Mavic in a diamond markings on the components versus the following year being marked with "MAVIC" in all upper case block letters.

Around 1986, which I think can be referenced in their second catalog (check with Chuck Schmidt maybe) Mavic listed for the first time the "1000 SSC Group." This was an assemblage of their top tier/light weight components (for the few items that they had various levels) including the following:

Headset 310 Handlebar 350 Stem 365 (differed from the 370 by being lighter and a non-hinging bar clamp area) Hubs 550 (same as the 500 except anodized finish) Brakes 430 brown anodized, Mavic labeled Modolo Professional (step up from the 410 Modolo Speedy type) BB 612 Crankset 630 (yes, 144bcd) Pedals 640 or 641 (English or Metric) Front derailleur 860 clamp/861 braze on Peugeot/862 braze on std (differed from the 810/811/812 in its brown anodizing) Rear derailleur 851 (differed from the 801 only in it's brown anodizing) Shift levers 820 (Simplex retro-friction)

Note that at this time they were not yet labeled individually with the SSC markings; I believe that came about around 1988.

Mavic's lower end group which included the items mention in brackets above was called their "1015 RS Group."

I have a 1000 SSC Group awaiting the right Vitus frame.
