choose a crank length based on the top of the stroke - because that's what effects the angle of bend in the knee. So if the knee bend you get at the top with 165s is best for you, and the knee bends too much with 170s, it will be the same with taller pedals - 170 will still be too long, by the exact same amount.

This, then, defeats the argument they tall cage is for uneven leg length, unless the length is below the knee.

I "don't know from nothing" but, I have always thought it was merely a production year issue. I'm sure I've seen them before and have never paid them any mind. It's a mass manufactured part and mass manufacturered parts change for countless numbers of reasons.
