Really cool, Scott! I'd love to see updated photos with more details as mak e progress on the two work-in-progress bikes. :-)
As for the 1948 Pista, the text on your page states "customized area around bottom bracket to accomodate different sized chainrings". Could you post a photo of that area if you get a chance? I'm curious because my '50s Masi Pista (which is very much identical to your '54 Pista) has an unusual "shaped/shaved" cutout that I am confused as to what it might be for. It looks very intentional... except the intent is unclear.
Also, the inside of my BB shell has what looks to be a blue plastic liner that is glued in place. Has anyone else seen this treatment on an early Masi? Photo here:
