David. Here's an example of a 1949 Super Special with external bearings (confirmed by Len as a Super Special) === this is my bike. http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/49HETCHINS/HetchinsRestore5

Len Ingram had verified for me that even though this frame had belled head lugs it was marked in the Hetchins build records as a Nulli Secundus. My suspicion is that Hetchins was taking orders at the Earl's Court show in 1949 for their new Latin Series models, but would still take an order to build a Super Special to order as well. The early ones might have been the same design with different names. David Cooper Chicago, IL

Kevin; Usually the Super Special had belled head tube lugs to accomodate the internal headset races and bearings, and the Nulli did not, but as I've gotten to know, and as Flash who does the Hetchins.org site wrote earlier;

"Nullis and SuperSpecials had extra cut outs, or not, at all periods. Not easy to distinguish Nullis from SuperSpecials in that period. A pretty good rule of thumb is: belled head lugs are SupSp, straight headlugs are Nulli, though even here I know of an exception".

David Cooper of the CR has a 1950/51 Super Special with a rare straight headlugs and not the typical belled lugs. Flash Identified the one on Ebay as a Nulli as well as I. I can call Len Ingram to see if it's in his record to get a more difinitive answer, and that is if Len has it in his records.

My understanding is that it is very difficult to positively distinguish the difference between a Super Special and Nulli Secundus, especially around 1951. I respect your knowledge and expertise of the Hetchins brand, and am simply curious as to how you arrived at the model designation. Thanks! Kevin Kruger - Grantville,PA
