"The Art of Wheelbuilding" by Gerd Schraner was highly recommended to me. I bought it, read it and loved it for all it's fine detail and theory. However it didn't leave me feeling that a wheel was something that I would be comfortable building for the first time. I took out a book at my local public library by "Bicycling" magazine and pages 62-67 had step by step photos and clear directions of what you needed to do. Three hours later I had a tight true wheel that has held up. I used Spokecalc to calculate the spoke lengths (available free on the internet). I purchased a used TS-6 Park wheel stand, and made my own dishing tool from a piece of plywood and a hand held metric ruler. I now feel friendly with the whole process. Go ahead and take the plunge or reacquaint yourself, if that's the case. Nothing short of meditation seems to bring such calm and involvement for me.
