Subject: [CR]Paramount Importance

Seems that some folks aren't taking kindly to alternate points of view on the topic. I've little doubt that people outside of the US who took cycling seriously during the 60's and 70's would laugh at the thought of riding a Schwinn. True, the Paramount model was the shining star of their line, and is a fine bicycle, but "Schwinn" is best known for "sturdiness", "durability", and "heftiness" - Stereotypes to be certain, but following the law that perception is reality, many people wouldn't even bother to consider a Schwinn ... not any Schwinn.

I suspect that, unless you grew up in the U.S., a Paramount would have been viewed as simply a good quality, mass produced bicycle - akin to the Raleigh Professional. If that's your world view, willingness to pay a premium for a Paramount in outstanding condition simply won't make sense to you.

Conversely, if you did grow up in the U.S., and you just knew that chrome Paramount was the finest, most gorgeous bicycle you'd ever seen (but out of reach), paying the premium seems quite reasonable. It doesn't, however, invalidate the alternate view. Schwinn's reputation outside of the U.S. was certainly different than it was inside, and it isn't treasonous for someone to point that out.

Peace,

John (stuck in the middle) Barry Mechanicsburg, PA
