Well, I never use clipless pedals, but I am thankful for them in a way, since it was clipless pedals that brought me into collecting classic bikes.

In 1996 I had began cycling again after maybe five years away from the sport. Still had maybe five old bikes from the early 70's through 1981, I didn't yet think of them as "classic". So I proceeded to equip them all with clipless pedals, which I must say are great if you don't intend to walk.

But when I put the clipless pedals on my wife's 1973 Windsor Pro, she refused to ride them. I think her words were, "Hell, I took me long enough to learn to use clips and straps." Faced with her intransigence, I put the original Campy NR steel road pedals back on the Windsor. But while digging the pedals out of boxes, I decided to put ALL the original parts back on. The result, which I would later call a "restoration" was cool, so soon the other bikes were being restored to original equipment as well. And the rest, as they say, is history.

I just gotta say I love that sound. I never realized it until the very first Cirque I attended. I was awakened at 3 AM on about the 3rd floor of the Battleground Inn by the sound of folks clicking into what sounded like Look pedals who were riding in the hallway. I knew right then that I was in the right place and would never miss another Cirque. I drifted back into a contented sleep with a little smile. I love my clipless pedals...off topic or not!
