In my previous posting about clipless pedals, I ON PURPOSE did NOT stress the one MAIN reason for usuing clipless pedals, SAFTEY. SAFETY SAFETY!!!! In a race in 1950 on a Airbase in the Midlands (now WEST Midlands) England (NOW UK) I fell with a group going for a prime, broke both wrists, NOW had I had clipless pedals I could have released my feet and MAYBE avoided the prang, BUT my bloody feet where so tied in tight with the straps and clips, over the top I went, I am sure Ted Ernst can tell many like tales, OF COURSE vintage bikes LOOK better with the old clips and straps,I agree they should be on them, BUT only for show, everyday riding use clipless, save your KNEES and possibly your LIFE, I am VERY surprise that NO one to date has brought up this,( I think) important point, SAFTEY. but then I suppose there are many other saftey factors in riding vintage bikes, HOW ABOUT BRAKES?? How in the world did COPY and BARTALLY ever stop or even slow down thoes vintage machines going down the passes in the TDF??? NOT to mention having there feet STRAPPED in, at least Lance had a chance, brakes that worked and CLIPLESS pedals to snap out off, Cheers, John Crump OldstillstrappedinBrit Parker, Co USA
