I've never stopped using clips and straps and never started using clipless.

For me, Detto Pietro Art. 74 are the basic all around shoe for traditional nail-on cleats. I use these with a version of Pavarin cleats that have some adjustment possible via a bolt feature.

I've tried most of the other brands, including Detto's Superlights (with rock maple soles and kangaroo uppers), Duegi, Diadora, Sidi, etc.

The most comfortable shoes I've found are the Adidas Merckx models, with the later ones supplied with attached adjustable cleats. Many of the Italian shoes are just too narrow for an average North American foot.

Once or twice a year I'll tip over at a surprise traffic light, landing on my back with my bike in the air between my legs like an overturned cockroach. Embarassing, yes, especaily with either of my sons nearby, but otherwise no damage done.
