I don't usually post to this bike list, but it was pointed out that there was some discussion of my Ebay auction here, and I wanted to get some answers. I don't much care for being called a liar and profiteer behind my back, and so I am posting the letter I received from Craig Fenstermaker and Brian Baylis concerning the Masi. It was based on this letter that I decided to go ahead and pay Brian $1400 to restore the frame. I am absolutely STUNNED that Brian now denies any of this, when they clearly spelled out almost word for word everything I have said about the frame.

I am not trying to make any misrepresentations, I am only telling people what Brian told me. If any of this is untrue, it calls into question Brian's ethtics, not mine. I have always admired Mr. Baylis' craftwork, but find his reaction befuddling to say the least!

greetings i am writing to let you know that we have received your masi.

we have completed our initial inspection and have discovered; 1) this is an unusual bike, it does not follow any s/n system that brian or i am familiar with. 2) it had columbus record chainstays instead of the standard chainstays. 3) it has lead a hard life, lottsa rust and several dents / dings / previous repairs

1 & 2 leads us to believe that this might have been a masi employee's bike originally, or perhaps it was built for a friend of mario's.

we understand that you want the bike returned to original condition. we feel that this can be done, but first we need a bit of direction from you. the beautifully chromed fork has been modified to use recessed allen nut brakes rather than the standard brakes. you can either used the fork as is with modern brakes or we can put the fork back to original condition. this requires stripping of the old chrome, modifying the fork crown, repolishing the crown and rechroming the fork. this will cost $150 - $175 depending upon the amount of polishing required.

the brake bridge on the frame has been likewise modified. again you have the option of keeping it as is, or we can put it back to original condition, ~ $25.

below is a repair / repaint estimate 1) remove TT guides $30 2) remove DT shift bosses $20 3) remove front derailleur hanger $10 4) remove BB cable guides $20 5) remove incorrect derailleur stop $10 6) install correct derailleur stop in correct position $25 7) install BB cable guides $30 8) repair rust, ( please call for details) $135 * 9) paint $400 10) decal application $75 11) detail paint $25

total = $980 if we redo the fork and frame brake issue

note, we have not yet stripped the paint from the frame. until we do so, we can not provide an iron clad estimate for rust damge repair. Please call for further details.

this is quite an interesting bike with an usual build and s/n. well worth restoring to original condition in my opinion. standard masi colors for this era bike are

orange / red the breaking away color turquoise blue silver metallic grey metallic champagne metallic light blue metallic dark blue metallic

they were not available with white / cream panels/

One of Vintage Cycle Studio's policies is to expect a 50% deposit for work prior to initiation. Brian did not have this policy unless chroming was involved, but he now recognizes that it is necessary to do so to run the business efficiently. i would appreciate it if you could forward a check for $500 to us in the next 10 days at the following address so that we can begin working on your bike.
