A friend of mine with experience in the paint trade (he used to paint Rolls Royces), and in restoring vintage motorcycles, told me to wipe the paint over with cotton wool soaked in oil. He and another person told me not to use waxes, which could damage old transfers (decals), if were not protected by a coat of varnish.

I've done this on my 1946 Carter, which is in its original finish, with rust speckles showing through, and irreplaceable original transfers, and it seems fine.
