The Windsor Competition's frame was not identical to the Professional's frame -- it was the same double-butted Columbus, but it did not have the drilled lugs or the chrome patches at the seatstay or rear dropouts (at least, not on my '76 model, owned since new).

Some may not have thought much of the Competition, but it was/is a darn good bike, and it *was* an amazing bargain. The dealer felt sorry for me after my Carrera was stolen from the garage, and I got my silver Competition for $225. I rode mine many, many miles, and it still feels really sweet, even now that I can afford (and own) other machines that I lusted after at the time.

The Carrera was a good entry-level bike, but it was a slug, compared to the Competition. It had a seamless, but straight-gauge, chromoly frame, and middle-of-the-road Japanese components (like a Sugino Maxy crank).

Cheers,

The website is only saying the Pro model was Columbus.

The full details at one point are in this ad:

http://www.classicrendezvous.com/Mexico/Windsor_Merckx.htm

The midpoint model ($300) was not made to the same standard as the Pro, despite the claims in that ad. Not that the Pro was great. That model was the bargain hunters favorite, a spec comparison queen but I never thought much of it. Bad wheels can ruin a bike and four cross, cruddy spokes, and cruddy rims did not a bargain make.
