Subject: [CR]1 1/8 inch top tubes

I owned a 1955 24 inch lugless Claud Butler that had an "oversize" top tube. My first Bill Philbrook 25" was lugged and had a one inch top tube but the four subsequent lugless frames were oversize. Bill told me that he replaced the top tube with a standard down tube so it must have added a few ounces to the weight. When I had my P-B-P bike built by Roberts he said that I was too fat and I must have Columbus Max tubing but not with the weird shaped Max top tube as it was "too rigid" so maybe you can have too much of a good thing.
