The only problem I've had with using modern 6-8 and 9-10 chain on the front rings is on older Campy cranks. The spread between rings seems about as wide as the chain links and I've had chain skate between rings when leading the downshift with the front. Cleared right up when I milled .010-.020 off the inner face of the crank arm boss. I've had no problem with chain skate on old Shimano cranks.

A couple of my riders have 9 speed IG cassettes on the rear and 9-10 chain with friction shifting. They are just an absolute JOY to friction shift, and the HG 7's are almost as good. The 127mm cassette hubs a reasonable upgrade for a 10 speed - assuming it wasn't already done 20 years ago.
