You are both right. Indeed, many racer wannabys became frustrated with tubulars. While the sincere hard-core rider discovered they could produce more power for races by training on clinchers and then racing on tubulars. Many of my San Francisco bike pals used to go a step further and used mountain bikes with knobby tires to train.
