Joel and Norris have the timely handle on it. The Weinmann brakes came out in the fall of '58. I had just arrived in Europe, Dortmund, Germany to be exact, and was getting set up and the Weinmann factory was helping pros on the small teams get some equipment.I was one of the guys that was lucky. The factory rep told us the brakes were the first run on the assembly line and we got them to use on our racing bikes. The rod front shift was correct for timeline. They worked best with a 3 to 5 tooth front chainwheel spread, although 7 was OK, too.

The secret was to soft pedal when shifting up in the front and "feel" the chain onto the larger ring. You could ram the shifting harder but it might crunch the chainwheel(s). Down onto the smaller ring was much easier. the racing wasn't as positive (No pun intended), and made one anticipate a little more. Single front lever would be correct, think the double DT shiftrs were more mid "50"s TDF rear and others mentioned would be "right on" for your project. You could use a 5 cog, but 4 would probably be more time accurate. Hope this helps a little. Ted Ernst Palos Verdes Estates,Ca
