I recall that Ray Booty used a SA three speed fixed "cocoa tin" with a 97inch top when he got the straight out 100 mile record in 1958. With a time of 3hr 28min he must have found the SA pretty efficient! A guy in my club had one and he used to find a "neutral" for descending. It slipped back into drive when we were descending Bowland Knott at about 45mph which was pretty exiting! I dont know if this is true but I read one time that with the later five speed SA hubs the reduction in gearing for each lower gear exactly matched the reduction in efficiency so that the effort required in each gear was the same!
