I have an ASC hub; a gift in the 1970s from my friend Jim Papadopoulos. I've ridden it bunches and bunches, and like it very much. It is not for sale, although I would not consider purchasing one for $450. Just not where I am, but I'm delighted to be among those who appreciate it that much.

But, more to the point, one little caveat: some of these do have wear, and some of the internals are virtually unobtainable. A little rounding this part(from slipping out of gear when using an unmodified 4-speed trigger like I have); a little wear on the axles of the planet gears. I appreciated the opportunity at Cirque 2005 to disassemble mine with Hilary Stone, and to see the parts through his eyes. All the wear on mine is perfectly normal, and the performance is still fine. But deep inside, I worry, and I don't ride mine with 110% exuberance anymore, but with deep respect for its elegance, integrity, and age. It will next go on a Claud Butler I bought from Billy Rounds, having spent about 25 years on my '38 Paramount, which now has proper Paramount hubs instead.

Well I have been 'outed', it seems.... So I admit it! I am willing to pay a somewhat silly price for an ASC hub... I am a fixed wheel addict, and I am scouring for an ASC hub to compliment that Mercian road and path frame I recently acquired for a very 'unsilly' price from Hillary Stone.

Yes, I am the one who pushed the price to where it ended, and I'm now kicking myself, wondering how much higher the winner would have gone.... Oh well...

Anyhow, I really like the statement that Jerry made: "That said, I think there is still a place for "friendly" prices among CR members..." And since I am a CR mamber, albeit a very new one, I would be eternally grateful to any one of you good people if you would put me out of my misery and lead me to the 'Holy Grail' of fixed wheel bliss, and sell me an ASC hub that you are not using....!

Be assured that if I ever get my hands on one, it will get used to the fullest extent that my legs can manage! And the machine it will grace will certainly be a proper classic machine!!

Yours in hopeful anticipation,
