Subject: [CR]I need help dating Major Nichols

Or, at least, finding out more about one of his creations. My search of the archives revealed a couple of Major Nichols bicycles out there among the CR listers, but not much hard information about the firm or the man. Does anyone have a clue about the serial number scheme?

My new acquisition is a track frame, 57cm square (ctc), with round fork blades. Similar in color to (one version of) Bianchi Celeste. Nice, understated lug lining (two colors) and lining on the wrap-around seat stay caps. The transfers are fairly intact, except the Reynolds stickers on the seat tube and fork blades. I've posted some photos at: http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/Major-Nichols-track

The serial number is MN 501, stamped on the underside of the BB shell. It seems too obvious that MN is for Major Nichols, so I'm suspicious that it's a coincidence.

The frame came to me with Zeus BB cups and a pista-length symmetrical axle (may also be Zeus, haven't pulled it apart yet). I don't recognize the headset and it has no readily visible markings. It's unusual in that the top cup and locknut have 10 flats instead of 8.

I would love to hear from anyone with information or comments on this frame, Major Nichols in general, and the mystery headset.
