I seriously doubt the cross brace has much of an effect. Cuevas was adamant about not using a jig or fixtures. Perhaps the scariness of this bike is due to a less than optimal geometry and/or alignment. Certainly this is a possibility. Everyone can have a bad day and relying only on one's hairy eyeball is a recipe for things slipping through the cracks.
