I have a picture of M.Poulidor taken at the 1966 Tour de France (unfortunately, it is looking at the left side of the bicycle) and the crankset is a Stronglight 49, the front derailleur is a Simplex (can't see the rear derailleur), the brakes are Mafacs, the shifters appear to be Campagnolo as do the small flange hubs!!

Sorry to disappoint the Francophiles but I find no record of Poulidor on anything besides Campagnolo components with Mafac brakes at anytime in his pro career.

Poulidor turned pro in 1960, the 1962 Tour was his first. I have a 1962 Tour photo of him (not included in the above link) that shows a Campy equipped Mercier. I'm still searching for 1960 and 1961 photos in le Miroir issues from those years

Now how many Columbus SL frames have you seen that take a 26.4 post, especially Italian one's of this era? Which begs the question, does this frame really have a Columbus SL seat tube?

I'm guessing that your frame had a SL down tube in the seat tube position. Down tubes were butted at both ends, and if used as a seat tube, would require a smaller diameter seat post to fit the butted end. Which begs the question, if the DT was used in the ST position, is the single-butted ST in the DT position?

OK, I will jump in!

Peter, I think that very likely is a real Colnago, circa moderately early 1970s, with a replacement fork and a bad paint & decal job. I am quite certain that Ernesto never used a Zeus crown! And possibly those water bottle mounts and shift lever bosses were an "upgrade" as well. List member David Bolduc acquired a similar frame at the Cirque which is out in my work shop right now awaiting "the torch" to return it to oiginal sans braze-on status!

Hello

My name is Peter Söderlund and I live in Sweden. I have a Colnago frame and I wonder if someone possible can help me with some questions I have on that frame.

It is a blue Colnago frame and it's little strange, I think. The fork on it have an inscription which says zeus 2000, it has campagnolo drop outs and is stamped with number 15.

The frame is also stamped with number 15 on the bottom bracket, but is also stamped with number 30 on the rear drop out.

The frame has also what looks like nuts soldered where the water bottle gage shall sit and have long campagnolo drop outs. I also think the frame has little strange decals, and that the decal on the front tube is placed very low, look at pictures.

The whole frame was built up with campagnolo except the bb cups which is sugino, but the spindle is campa and it have an inscription I never seen before- 70-ss-120, +1-+1.5.

The former owner claims that he bought the frame from a guy who rode Tour de France on it, but unfortunately he didn't remember the guys name or which year it was. I don't know, if that's true or not.

Any help with how old the frame can be or what the model is, or any help or answers at all should be very, very much appreciated of me.

Pictures of the frame can be seen at: http://goto.glocalnet.net/blackdot/

Greetings from:

Peter Söderlund

Nice bike, but my bike is from an earlier period, and it's not build that beautifull with open lugs. my frame looks ike the one on the classicrendezvous website, the proportions and lugs are exactly the same, but is has the normal connection for the rear derailleur.

There's also a number on the frame: 6413 EP 11, i think it's a stamp from the police, to register the bike, but maybe it's not. It's marked in the top of the vertical tube.

Hugh, I recently sold a Frejus; here is part of the ad, this may help:

"She still sports her original head tube badge which reads: "Frejus Torino, Campione del Mondo, 1932,48,51,53,54,55". These numbers refer to the dates that The World Championships were won by a rider using a Frejus machine."

Listers and Listees,

It is my understanding that Mercier offered the 100, 200 and 300 series for

sale here in the state. The 100 was a low end entry level bike. The 200 was built on a steel frame (not Reynolds) with chromed fork and stays with Juy Simplex dropouts and Simplex Prestige derailleurs. I have seen several 200 models that had a Poulidor bike rider foil decal on the seat tube. I would

imagine they were paying tribute to the guy. The 300 would have been the top of the line with a Reynolds 531 F&F, probably similar or better then a Gitane

TdF or Peugeot PX-10. I am not sure of the componentry.

The Mercier being auctioned on Ebay is built with eyelets on the rear drops. Not a very good indicator of a "Team" bike. Any thoughts to the contrary?

i have a set of these laced to Maillard hubs on a Bianchi BICI 11 and yes they sure are nice to look at and polish up beautifully. Mine are 27 x 1 1/4

and have the original Michelin Elan tires 27x 1. The bike is from 1983 and these were likely the first hooked rim clinchers from Mavic. Below is an

excerpt from a Mavic timeline but i can't remember what site i got it from. easy enough to google tho.

1983. Module E, a tire rim with hooks, enters the cycling history book. The first rim with double 'hook' bridge to seat a high-pressure tire developed by Michelin: the Elan. With this patented concept, Mavic started developing a new generation of rims for tires that rapidly benefited from all of Mavic's technological innovations. In the cycle-racing world the use of tubular tires gradually declines in favor of tires .

The ebay system doesn't allow you to bid against yourself. If your $10 bid is winning an auction but you're worried someone else will steal it from you, go ahead and put in another bid of $100. If no one else bids, you'll still win it at $10. It's just another way of raising your MAXIMUM bid. It can be useful to get your foot in the door at a low price (so the auction can't be closed) and then, at the last moment, put in a much higher bid.

I suppose it depends on which issue you'd like some disagreement. This is surely not a "pro" bike, but if it is indeed reynolds 531 thoughout, it's likely a high quality frame.

As for the eyelets... in "those days" many pro-level bikes had eyelets. The idea was that you'd install fenders/mudguards for your winter training rides. this was especially the case with French bicycles. Amitiés, Fred Rednor - Arlington, Virginia (USA)

Hi Pete, The headtube and chainstays on my Coppi are "engraved or stamped" with the "Coppi Wreath" and "Campionissimo". Also note the front and rear drilled Campy dropouts!!! This technique was used on a few other Italian frames from the same period rather than the use of decals.

Hello Hugh,

I have a 1969 or 1970 which has the same references (as well as "Frejus... Torino"). On my bike, the head "badge" is the same transfer as on the seat tube. Afraid I can't help you with actual dates, but I will keep looking. Perhaps this will at least be a start toward narrowing down the time.

Good Luck! Bob Hanson, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
