The thing that I find amazing (I think - please correct me if i'm wrong) - is that TREK never made any plain CARBON STEEL bikes. Perhaps it was by necessity, due to the cost of manual brazing in wisconsin, but even the lowest-end treks had chromoly tubing.

Can the TREXPERTS tell me if TREK ever made an unbutted frameset?

I cannot think of other production houses in that era that refused to make carbon-steel or unbutted bicycles, since that's such a large part of the market.
