Jerry,

Thanks for the heads up, this is a nice looking bike. Maybe I c an start a real collection now. I really like my silver '78 comp gs:

Rode it both day s this weekend! One glaring dissimilarity I saw compared to mine is the cra nk - sure looks like a NR set on the '80 to me but you can clearly see the G.S. stamp on the driving side (anyway). Never seen this Gran Sport crankse t before. I notice the slots are a little wider on it than the NR set that I upgraded mine to.

Just ran across this on eBay:

http:/ /cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-80-Raleigh-Competition-GS-road-bike_W0QQitemZ27001828 4683QQihZ017QQcategoryZ98084QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

A Japanese-built Raleigh Competition GS. I never knew any such thing exis ted. I knew there were high end Japanese Raleighs, but I thought these wer e distinct models like the Raleigh Superbe. Never knew Raleigh ever had a high end model built in Japan to much the same specs earlier built in Engla nd, including 531 tubing, Brooks saddle and European gruppo, in this case c ampy GS. The only Japanese bits on this bike seem to be the Suntour dropou ts, Diacompe G brakes, Araya rims, and perhaps the bars and stem, which are marked Raleigh, but might be SR or Nitto.

What other high end 53 1 tubed European equiped models did Raleigh have built in Japan if any? Mi ght there even have been Japanese-made Raleigh Professionals? That would n ot doubt horrify English trdaitionalists.

BTW, at the starting bi d of $25, this one would be a heck of a deal, but the reserve has not been met. Too big for me.
